Jet Area in Mitral Regurgitation

Jet area in MR

How to calculate Aortic Regurgitation Jet Area Ratio.

  1. Obtain a CFD of the largest MR Jet. The jet area is indicative of the degree of mitral regurgitation. The major factors that can influence the jet area need to be accounted for on each interrogation of the mitral valve. Those factors are:
    • Ejection Fraction
    • Aliasing Velocity
    • Color Gain
    • Blood Pressure

Low EF will falsely lower the jet size. Low Aliasing velocity (should be around 50 cm/sec) will falsely enlarge the jet area. High color gain will falsely enlarge the jet area. Low blood pressure may falsely lower the jet area (interpret the jet area with a blood pressure of 150 systolic, if possible).
